Blackwater Nitrate Remover – Reduce Nitrate, Preserve Valuable Humic Substances
The new generation of nitrate control for blackwater aquariums.
Blackwater aquariums present particular challenges when it comes to water care. Many tropical fish species, including discus fish and numerous South American tetras, inhabit natural environments where the water is influenced by dissolved organic substances from leaves, wood and plant material. These include humic substances and fulvic acids, which give the water its characteristic amber to brown colour.
Anyone maintaining a natural-style blackwater aquarium wants to control unwanted nitrate accumulation without unnecessarily altering the characteristic properties of this unique aquatic environment.
The Discusfood Innovation
With its Blackwater Nitrate Removers BW 001, BW 002 and BW 003, Discusfood offers a range of products designed for targeted nitrate control in blackwater aquariums.
The unique concept: nitrate is reduced while the humic substances essential to blackwater environments are retained in the water. This allows nitrate control to be combined with the aim of preserving the natural characteristics of the water as far as possible.
Why Are Humic Substances So Important?
Humic substances are complex organic compounds formed during the decomposition of plant material. They occur in many natural bodies of water and influence their chemical properties. Depending on their composition and concentration, they can affect water colouration, the binding of certain metal ions and the chemical environment.
For aquarists, they are therefore an important part of maintaining natural water conditions. Particularly in blackwater biotopes, it makes sense to select filter media that do not unnecessarily remove desirable organic components from the water.
Targeted Nitrate Reduction
Nitrate (NO₃⁻) is produced in aquariums primarily through the biological breakdown of nitrogen-containing substances. Uneaten food, fish waste and dead plant material contribute indirectly to its formation. In closed aquarium systems, nitrate can therefore accumulate over time.
Persistently elevated nitrate concentrations are a reason to review feeding, stocking levels, filtration performance and water changes. Targeted nitrate removal can complement regular aquarium maintenance.
The BW series is designed for aquarists who want to combine nitrate control with the specific requirements of a blackwater aquarium. The precise selectivity for nitrate over humic substances depends on the filter medium used and the prevailing water conditions.
For Natural-Style Blackwater Aquariums
The Discusfood BW series is designed for aquariums in which the characteristic properties of blackwater are to be preserved, for example when keeping South American ornamental fish and in appropriately designed discus aquariums.
Discusfood BW 001–BW 003: Targeted nitrate control for blackwater aquariums – with particular emphasis on preserving valuable humic substances.
Actual performance and product-specific operating limits must be assessed in accordance with the technical specifications of each model.
1. Use in Blackwater Aquariums
- Choose the appropriate model: Select BW 001, BW 002 or BW 003 according to the approved product specifications and intended application.
- Install the filter medium: Place the Blackwater Nitrate Remover in the filter according to the Discusfood instructions for use. Ensure an even flow of water through the medium.
- Monitor water parameters: Measure nitrate levels regularly before and during use.
- Preserve water characteristics: Adapt aquarium maintenance to the needs of the fish species being kept. If necessary, also monitor pH, conductivity and other relevant water parameters.
- Monitor performance: If nitrate levels do not decrease as expected, check the flow rate, whether the medium has become exhausted, and other possible sources of nitrate.
2. Regeneration with Pure Sodium Chloride (NaCl)
If salt regeneration is specified in the relevant Discusfood instructions for use, the following solution can be used:
Salt solution: 100 g of pure sodium chloride (NaCl) without additives per litre of cold tap water.
- Dissolve the salt completely in the water.
- Fully immerse the Blackwater Nitrate Remover in the salt solution.
- Gently move the material to ensure that the solution reaches all areas.
- After the specified soaking time, rinse the material thoroughly with suitable water.
- Only return the material to the aquarium after thorough rinsing and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions
Important notes: Use only pure sodium chloride (NaCl) without additives. Regeneration must take place outside the aquarium. The used salt solution must not enter the aquarium. The regeneration time, rinsing procedure and maximum possible number of regeneration cycles depend on the approved technical specifications of the respective BW model.
