Crystal – clean nitrate remover

DISCUSFOOD CRYSTAL CLEAN NITRATE REMOVER

Precise nitrate control for aquariums with few or no aquatic plants
Clean water. Controlled nitrate levels. Fewer unnecessary water changes.

In many aquariums, nitrate (NO₃) is produced as a natural end product of the biological nitrogen cycle. Nitrate can build up continuously, particularly in heavily stocked breeding, rearing and community tanks, as well as in aquariums with few or no aquatic plants.

Discusfood Crystal Clean Nitrate Remover has been specially developed for these types of aquarium. The high-performance, regenerable filter medium utilises the principle of ion exchange to specifically remove nitrate ions from the aquarium water.

Scientifically proven principle

In anion exchange, negatively charged ions such as nitrate (NO₃⁻) are exchanged at the filter medium for other ions, typically chloride (Cl⁻). This process has been established in water treatment for decades and is also used for the targeted removal of nitrate.

For the aquarium hobby, this means:

Nitrate is reduced where it is produced – directly within the filter circuit.
The filter medium is simply placed in the final filter stage. All the filter water flows through the medium and is treated continuously as it does so.

Particularly suitable for

In aquariums with few plants in particular, an important natural consumer of nitrate is missing. A continuously rising nitrate level can therefore be an indication of an imbalance between nutrient input and nutrient consumption.

Fewer water changes – based on actual need rather than as a routine measure

A high nitrate level is often a reason for additional water changes. With Discusfood Crystal Clean Nitrate Remover, nitrate levels can be specifically controlled.
This can help you plan water changes more closely according to actual need, rather than having to carry them out solely because nitrate levels are rising.
Depending on the aquarium, its inhabitants and the source water, this saves water, energy and running costs.
After all, every water change involves more than just the consumption of fresh water. In temperature-controlled aquariums, the newly added water often has to be brought back up to the required temperature.

Important:

Discusfood Crystal Clean Nitrate Remover is not a substitute for regular water changes. It is an additional tool for the targeted control of nitrate levels. Other dissolved substances, organic loading and mineral balances must still be managed through appropriate care and water changes.

Regenerable

Up to 300 uses
A particular advantage of Discusfood Crystal Clean Nitrate Remover is that it can be regenerated.
If the exchange capacity is exhausted and the measured NO₃ level rises again, the filter medium can be regenerated using a defined sodium chloride solution and then reused.

This means the filter medium is not a disposable product:

insert → reduce nitrate → regenerate → reuse.

Ion-exchange technology generally allows the regeneration of exhausted exchange capacities using concentrated salt solutions.
When used correctly, the Discusfood medium can be regenerated up to 300 times.

Easy to use

Rinse the filter bag thoroughly with cold tap water before first use and then place it in the final filter stage.
Filter water should flow through the entire filter medium. Measure the nitrate level regularly. The actual service life depends, amongst other things, on:

Under typical conditions, the effective service life can be approximately 4–8 weeks.

Do not regenerate according to the calendar – but according to the measured value.

Regeneration

For regeneration:

Important:

Use only pure sodium chloride (NaCl) without additives
No iodised salt, no salt containing calcium or magnesium, and no salt containing anti-caking agents, flavourings or other additives.

The regeneration solution must never be allowed to enter the aquarium. It contains concentrated dissolved substances and the ions displaced from the filter medium during regeneration. In ion-exchange processes, a contaminated regeneration solution is produced as a result, which must be disposed of properly.

Water parameters remain the basis

A filter medium can only be used optimally if the water parameters are checked regularly.

Measure NO₃ – assess the effect – regenerate in good time.

Regular monitoring of nitrate is part of systematic water quality control in aquariums. Nitrate is produced in the nitrogen cycle through the microbial breakdown of nitrogen-containing substances and can accumulate, particularly in the presence of high organic load and insufficient nutrient consumption.
